What this sector actually looks like

Most production problems are visibility problems. The information exists, but it is on a whiteboard, in a supervisor’s head, and in a spreadsheet updated at the end of the day, so decisions are made against a picture that is several hours old.

Capture has to be cheap or it does not happen. A system that requires a supervisor to sit at a terminal will be filled in at the end of the shift from memory, which is worse than not collecting it.

Once capture is current, the useful work begins: which orders are at risk, where the queue actually is, and which machine or stage is the constraint this week rather than in theory.

Questions people actually ask

  • Do we need new machines or sensors?

    Usually not to start. Manual capture at each stage delivers most of the visibility benefit; sensors are worth adding once you know which measurement is actually driving decisions.

  • Will supervisors adopt it?

    Only if it costs them less time than it saves. That is a design requirement, and the fastest way to fail here is to build for the office and roll it out to the floor.

  • Can it work alongside our existing ERP?

    Yes. Adding floor-level capture to an ERP that has none is a common and comparatively small piece of work.
